Hangover and a Cure or Two.

Hangover and a Cure or Two.

Both waking up at the same time, slowly lifting their heads off the booze-soaked table were sitting Harold and Dr. Wetbrain. Looking at each other cross-eyed, Wetbrain decides to tell Harold all about hangovers, again.
A hangover is basically a form of alcohol poisoning and has been around since alcohol was stumbled upon for stumbling purposes. Recently in Tbilisi, Russia 8000-year-old jars with wine traces were found.
What happens after a good drunk is your body tries to get rid of alcohol through peeing and sweating taking much of your needed H2O with it. So now your body can’t get enough water from its regular source, so your system must steal the water from other parts. Like your brain cells, thus creating a lovely headache. Dehydration also causes muscle cramps, thirst, dizziness and fatigue. Thus, the hangover.
The myth of coffee sobering you up does not work. That just keeps you as a wide awake drunk when you probably should be passed out.

Side note: Females easily suffer more than men. Apparently, they do not have enough enzymes to break down the alcohol as men do.

More Hangover Help Tips:
Time is the real remedy of a hangover and having some sort of substance in the belly to absorb the stale alcohol helps also. May I recommend ‘hangover soup’, which consists of browned greasy hamburger, canned tomatoes, macaroni, lots of garlic powder and water.
My favorite thing to do on a dreadful Sunday morning is to make a big bed on the living room floor. Lots of pillows, a whole bunch of movies lined-up so I can sleep watch them all day. Have gallons of real juice and tons of snacks just waiting for you at arm’s length.

Hangover Remedies:
As was mentioned, alcohol has been around for about 8000 years. Hangover remedies most likely have been around for about 7999 years, whether they worked or not. It seems like mind over matter on most remedies.
Here are some hangover remedies from around the world and throughout time.
* Romans (600 BC) ate cabbage leaves; they also ate fried canaries.
* Egyptians (3100 BC) drank cabbage juice and took medical papyri.
* Haitians (1500 BC) stuck 13 pins into the cork of the bottle of rum they drank night before.
* In Puerto Rico some rub lemons under their drinking arm.
* Russians use to swear by sliced cucumbers, also sauerkraut. I say have a toasted cucumber and mayo sandwich.
* In the middle-ages (500 AD) folks would have a plate of bitter almonds and dried eel.
* In the outskirts of Mongolia, they drank pickled sheep’s eyes in tomato juice for a cure. Appetizing!
* The old wild west cowboys (1865 – 1895) made tea from dried rabbit droppings. Yeah, they drank too much cheap whisky the night before.

* Green tea on the other hand cleans the system and urinary track. Ginger root tea settles the upset stomach.
* Try greasy, take-out foods to help absorb the alcohol that is still in you.

* Bananas or peaches – the liver loves the iron filled bananas and everyone loves the vitamin C filled juicy peaches.
* If you dare, try a blended raw egg and orange juice drink. Yuk! Where’s the vodka?
* Popping a few multivitamins or vitamin C always helps.

Final note:
Just to show what an epidemic, hangovers are, a journal reported that in the U.S. absenteeism and poor job performance cost the economy 3.3 billion dollars (us). In Canada the value is at 1.8 billion dollars (us). All from hangovers!

“Harold wake up!” Dr. Wetbrain yells. “You of all people should listen to this.” Again.

Oldest Wine Found In 8000-Year-Old Jars.

Oldest Wine Found In 8000-Year-Old Jars.

Dr. Wetbrain was thinking one day about all the wildlife that enjoy getting drunk. Wild animals were probably getting drunk off fermented fruit long before humans did. Even certain dinosaurs probably got drunk. How long did it take for humans to finally enjoy the indulgence of drunkenness? Or got smart enough.

Recently archaeologists found 8000-year-old clay jars that proves humans were getting drunk since around 5800 to 6000 BC. In November 2017 archaeologists discovered these ancient jars that are around 82 cm in height and 41 cm in width and have carvings of grape clusters and a dancing man. These ancient jars were found about 50 kms from Tbilisi, Russian ruled capital of Georgia, near Persia.

Earliest evidence of wine found in giant, 8,000-year-old jars - The Washington Post

Scientists with biochemical analyses technology discovered that in the clay particles of these jars were traces of tartaric acid, Eurasian grape, malic (contributes to the sour taste of fruits), succinic and citric acids. All the important ingredients in the production of wine. This traditional Eurasian Qvevri wine making method is still used today.

At one time alcohol was used for commerce exchange which made wine invaluable to religious cults, medicine and society in general.

Dr. Wetbrain giggled to himself. The other day he read an article about Dr. Juan Carlos Marvizon Ph.D. giving a whole story on how humans are smarter than animals. Really!? Animals got drunk long before humans. Probably even fruit eating dinosaurs. Dinosaurs and birds have been around, getting drunk, for 235 million years. Humans 2.5 million years and getting drunk for only 8000 years. So, who was smarter about getting drunk first? Take that Dr. Marvizon!

Solitary Sot Series – Drinking Alone by Dimpling Alone.

This is the last installment of the Solitary Sot Series which is dedicated to the Drinking Alone comrade. Who could forget the first drinking alone game of ‘Cap’. Then there was the energetic solitary game of ‘Darts For One’. We now conclude the Solitary Sot Series with a fun card game called ‘Dimpling Alone’.

DIMPLING ALONE

  Preparation:

Step 1

In the middle of table, place 3 cards down (face up).

Each card must be a different suit. If the same suit comes up, replace and burry old card back into deck. Repeat if necessary.

Dimpling Alone by Dr. Wetbrain

Step 2

Deal yourself ten cards (or how many you want). Do not look at cards that were dealt to yourself.

Play:

Step 1

Now the game starts with you picking up first top card…. look at it. If that card is the same suit as any of the 3 cards faced up, put that card down on that suit. Now there should be 2 cards on that suit.

2 cards = 2 drinks

Hang on to your seat…. the drinking begins.

Step 2

Take another turn, one card at a time.

3 cards of same suit = 3 drinks

4 cards of same suit = 4 drinks

9 cards of same suit = 9 drinks

12 cards ……… etc.

Conclusion:

Drinking alone, a solitary sot, is not a bad thing to do. First, there is no one to argue with, no one to cry on your shoulder, no one constantly talking forever without you getting a word in edge wise, no one bumming smokes and beer, no one vomiting on you, and the list goes on.

The additional bonus is when you finally pass out you have nothing to fear, like someone drawing on you with a permanent marker or shaving your eye brows. That’s what Dr. Wetbrain says. Awe memories.

Putin Is a Dink, Beer – Putin Huylo.

Putin Is a Dink, Beer.

Putin Huylo.

Putin Huilo - new beer from Lviv

Dr. Wetbrain at the liquor store came across a 4 pack of beer with a very cool looking label. Had to buy it for research purposes.

Ends up that this beer is produced around the world due to the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine which started February 24, 2022. A Ukrainian beer called ‘Putin Huylo’. Roughly translated as ‘Putin is a Dink’.

The words ‘Putin Huylo’ were heard first as a protest song towards the 2014 Russian attack on Ukraine. ‘Huylo’ means dick or can be translated as dickwad, dickhead and prick. They all describe Vladimir Putin to a T. The human atrocities and horrible illegal war crimes brought on by the tyrant President Putin. What’s wrong with this heartless idiot? Lots I would say. Even his family is pissed off at him. If you look up ‘dickhead’ in the dictionary, Putin’s picture is there.

Was Putin drunk when he thought of this invasion?

The Putin Huylo was originally brewed by Pravda Brewing in Lviv, Ukraine. And now this brewing company makes Molotov Cocktails for the cause. Sort of like whiskey distilleries converting to make hand sanitizers for the Covid epidemic.

Visit Ukraine - The Pravda Beer 🍺 Theatre, Lviv... | Facebook

Pravda Brewery continues for the cause by giving their beer recipe to any brewery who wants it worldwide. A lot of the worldwide brewers are brewing the Putin Huylo beer with the original recipe and label with all profits going to the Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief. You can help by just drinking beer!

I tried a can or 6 of this strong 8% alc./vol beer. For research purposes only and of course contributions to the Ukraine cause. Pravda Breweries made the Putin Haylo as a dry hopped golden ale brewed with Pilsner malt, Cara Munich and wheat. The beer was very enjoyable, for strong beer. Had a hint of grapefruit flavour I thought.

Pretty much all liquor stores in North America are refusing to sell Russian vodka, wine and beer. That will show Russia that we are not fooling around.

Queen Elizabeth and Gin.

Queen Elizabeth II and Her Gin.

Queen Elizabeth bringt eigene Gin-Marke heraus – mit Zutaten aus ihrem Garten | GLAMOUR

Maybe I’m thinking to much about Queen Elizabeth II and her Platinum Jubilee. Dr. Wetbrain thought to himself. But a previous post made me want to look a little deeper into her Sandringham Dry Gin.

This year at the age of 96 the Queen introduced from Buckingham Palace a fine gin called Sandringham Dry Gin. It is known that the Queen has a love for a Gin and Dubonnet Wine cocktail. Which consists of 2 ounces of Dubonnet wine, 1 ounce of gin, a lemon wedge and ice. Note: In the 1500’s, Queen Elizabeth I drank strong ale for breakfast. Drunk by noon.

David Barrie: Redesigning Buckingham Palace

For the Sandringham Gin the herbs, citrus and other botanicals were harvested from the Buckingham Palace Gardens. 325 wild plant species on 40 acres. 250 species are flowers and to complement the garden 30 species of birds. Some of the ingredient of this gin consists of lemon verbena, hawthorn berries, bay leaves and mulberry leaves.

Produced by family owned WhataHoot Distillery and gin school. Launched in an old barn at Sandringham Estate, Norfolk, England. This estate was inherited by Queen Elizabeth 2 from her father George VI in 1952. Both her father and grandfather, George VII died at this estate. Only 8000 acres.

WhataHoot Distillery (King's Lynn) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

This 42% fine gin sold in large 700ml bottles for about $50.oo, unfortunately sold only in the UK. Good to note that a small batch of gin proceeds support the huge Royal Arts Collection.

Sandringham Dry Gin is a regal alcohol beverage. Dr. Wetbrain drifted in thought. Only sold in the UK. I must get ahold of my connections to smuggle a bottle to me! Oh, did I say that out loud.

WTF. Alcohol Prohibition In Canada.

“Harold, warm up your truck and get your ‘Free the Alcohol’ sign out!”, Dr. Wetbrain yelled in a panic. “We are going to Raymond, Alberta. We are going to protest alcohol prohibition.”

“I will tell you about this town on our way. I’m driving!”

For over 120 years prohibition of alcohol is still alive and well, still lingering in North America. Canada yet!

Raymond, Alberta, Canada is a small town which has a population of 4200. 20 minutes south of Lethbridge, 240 kilometers from Calgary. Founded 1901 and named after industrialist Jesse Knight’s son.

Raymond - Lethbridge & Southern Alberta Real Estate

Since 1902 alcohol was prohibited in this little town. WTF!?

This year 6 out of 7 councilors voted No for public sales of alcohol in Raymond. The prohibition continues. The vote might have been influenced because most of Raymond’s fine citizens are of a certain church persuasion. Note: You still can drive 20 minutes to Stirling to pick up alcohol for private home consumption. Also, if you talk nicely or related to the town council, they might give you a permit for alcohol at a wedding.

“Wake up Harold were here! The town looks dead. The street is empty. OK lets just stand in front of this old garage station and loudly chant. Get your sign ready.” Dr. Wetbrain commanded.

Russian and Ukraine Vodka History.

Because of his reputation of being a guru of sort, Dr. Wetbrain had a lot of strange characters dropping into his country shack. One time there was a colorful hyper thing from Russia. Baggy shiny bright blue shirt and baggy shimmery red pants. A jet, black sash around his waist. And, a black packsack strapped to his back.

Sergei was literally dancing as he came down the path. Spinning around and everything. A very, very happy lad. When he opened his packsack, we knew why. Two big bottles of Vodka from Russia and Ukraine and lots of grapefruit juice for mix. With his huge white smile and bad English, he asks Dr. Wetbrain. “Got any glasses…. Ice?”

Doctor just smiled and said, “Da”. Even later that afternoon that was the only Russian word he knew.

After we all had our quart jars refilled with vodka and grapefruit juice, we sat around outside of the shack on top of stacked fire wood. “Do you want to know about vodka?” Sergei began and continued without waiting for a reply. “Us Russians and my neighbor countries, Ukraine and Poland all take claim to the birth of vodka.”

Voda, in Russian means water, which is what vodka looks like. Imported vodka from my motherland tastes like water also. You should try the 80-proof vodka. That will knock your socks off.” As he points to his bottles with an upward nod with his chin.

At first, in the 1100’s, vodka was made from rye grain. And used as an anesthetic and disinfectant, believe it or not. It was the middle 1300’s when vodka became popular for drinking. Perhaps the prescription conditions were not accurate, so lets drink this new libation instead.

Since Russia, Ukraine and Poland are very popular for potato growing, we started making vodka out of…. potatoes.

Now these countries drink vodka with their meals and festive occasions. Adults also.

“But Sergei, when did vodka come to North America?” Curiously Dr. Wetbrain askes.

“Ah…. Da, da. About when you were born Deda.” Sergei replies with his odd humor.

“1930’s is when vodka became popular in this fine continent. Come, let us start on the next bottle.”

Dr. Wetbrain says that the 2 best vodkas sold in North America are imported from Latvia and not Russia. The horrible war brought on by Russia against Ukraine dictates that imported vodka is not from Russia, naturally. The 2 best imported vodkas in North America are Stolichnaya which is produced in Latvia by exiled Russian-born billionaire Yuri Shefler, and Moskovskaya vodka which is not Russian and made in Latvia also.

Stolichnaya is rebranding to distance its Latvian-made vodka from Putin's Russia - MarketWatch

Hope you enjoyed this information on the Russian – Ukraine vodka history.

The 1920s Alcohol Prohibition.

The 1920’s Alcohol Prohibition.

Why didn't prohibition work? You asked Google – here's the answer | Stephen Moss | The Guardian

Alcohol Being Dumped from Metmuseum.org

Dr. Wetbrain thinks that this ‘1920s alcohol prohibition’ is the most idiotic and inhumane political decision that any government ruling has ever done. Were the politicians drunk when they thought of this?

From 1920 to 1933 the United States prohibited the manufacture, sales and transportation of intoxicating liquors and was called the ‘prohibition’. Were they drunk when they thought this up?

January 16, 1920 the 18th amendment to the United States Constitution went into effect. Gangsters saw this as a business opportunity to make high profits from dealing in an illegal way with this new law.

These gangsters and bootleggers would smuggle in rum from the Caribbean or whiskey from Canada into the United States.

The smarter gangsters also opened up secret bars which were hidden from the authorities for regular people to sneak into, to drink and socialize called ‘speakeasies’. The name ‘Speakeasy’, was named from having all the patrons whisper to each other so the coppers (police), would not find and arrest these clubs.

Speakeasy, Metmuseum.org

In 1929 the ‘great depression’ began, the stock market crashed, and the government needed money, people needed jobs or to be drunk. To have alcohol taxed legally again would have solved all these problems.

On December 5,1933, the United States Constitution made the production, sales and distribution of alcohol was legal again. Yay!

Photos | Prohibition

Metmuseum.org

During this prohibition era, whiskey was able to be prescribed by medical doctors to very many patients for all sorts of ailments such as sniffles, mild headaches and slight depression.

Over one million gallons of whiskey per year was, suddenly, given freely by doctors as medical prescriptions.

The 1920’s United States alcohol prohibition is not a new concept. Other countries on historical dates have had their try on alcohol prohibition.

1919 – 1932   Finland

1919         Hungarian Soviet Republic

1916 – 1927   Norway

1915 – 1933   Iceland

1914 – 1925   Soviet Union (U.S.S.R.)

1907 – 1948   Canada (Prince Edward Island)

Countries today where alcohol is banned.

Afghanistan – Absolutely no alcohol consumed.

Kuwait – No booze what so ever.

India – Individual states have alcohol prohibition such as Lakshadweep, Gujarat and Nagaland.

Iran – Since 1979.

Pakistan – Certain non-Muslim minorities must apply for a permit for alcohol consumption. Good luck.

Philippines – The only time alcohol sales are prohibited here is two days before an official election.

Thailand – A little different then the Philippines where alcohol prohibition is only the same day as an official election.

Saudi Arabia – No alcohol at all.

Yemen – No booze being drunk here.

Dr. Wetbrain says, “These are countries I will not be visiting any time soon. What’s their problem?”

Solitary Sot – Drinking Darts For One.

Let us continue with the Solitary Sot series for the hardy drink alone drunk. Darts for one sounds good and easy.
